It’s so simple. Yes, this Buttered Instant Pot Cabbage is so simple that I almost didn’t make it a blog post. But I promised I’d post more recipes that weren’t too complicated yet still were great on flavor. So here’s to delicious cabbage made right in your Instant Pot Pressure Cooker.
My family and I love to visit different churches in the rural parts of North Carolina. One of our favorite things to do after church is to…eat. One of our favorite churches feeds us after service and it’s some of the best soul food cooking you can have. I’m talking baked chicken, macaroni and cheese, and cabbage.
The cabbage is perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned, and so very delicious. So I converted the recipe to my Instant Pot so I can have cabbage whenever I want.
How to prepare cabbage for cooking
In order to cook this cabbage in the Pressure Cooker, start by washing and cutting the cabbage. First, cut the cabbage in half. Then core the cabbage by removing the tough stems. I cut a "V" shape around the core and remove it.
Lay the cabbage side by side and cut each half into four separate pieces. Then, slice across the pieces and cut cabbage into 1 inch pieces. It shall fall apart into a ton of pieces but that is ok.
How to cook cabbage in an Instant Pot Pressure Cooker
First, add your liquid to the insert. I use 1 cup of chicken broth. Then add your butter and lay your cut cabbage on top.
You can fill your Instant Pot to the top so long as the cabbage doesn’t interfere with closing of the lid or touch the lid when closed. The cabbage will shrink when cooking. I do the same thing when I make my Pressure Cooker Collard Greens.
Once you’ve placed your cabbage in the pressure cooker, cover and cook on high pressure for 6 minutes. Once your timer is done, do a quick release and add your salt and pepper.
How long does it take to cook cabbage in a pressure cooker?
That will honestly depend. I prefer 6 minutes as it makes the cabbage nice and soft but not too mushy. For cabbage with a little more crisp, you can reduce the time to 4 minutes. My pressure cooker takes about 15 minutes to come to pressure with this recipe.
Can I sub ingredients?
Yes. You can sub vegetable broth for chicken broth if you want to make it Vegeterian. Add other vegetables like carrots or thick cut potatoes as well.

Notes
- This recipe was prepared in a 6Qt Instant Pot Duo.
- You can substitute vegetable broth for chicken broth. You can also omit the butter, but then it wouldn't be buttered cabbage.
- Serve with a slotted spoon.
- I highly recommend investing in a good black pepper grinder. There is nothing like fresh ground pepper.

Step by Step Photos of Instant Pot Buttered Cabbage
Add your chicken broth, butter, to the Instant Pot. Then add your cabbage on the top. Cover your Instant Pot and make sure your valve is set to "Sealing" Press Pressure Cook (Or Manual on some models) and adjust timer to 6 minutes by using the "+" or "-" buttons. Make sure it's set to High Pressure. When timer goes off, press Cancel and carefully switch the valve from "sealing" to "venting" Some people use a spoon or dish towel to avoid the steam. Once all the pressure is released, open the Instant Pot and season the cabbage with salt and pepper. Stir and serve with a slotted spoon.

I added a Honey Baked Ham bone to the pot and it took this excellent recipe up several notches. So Good!

Great idea Mike. That sounds delicious. Thank you for sharing.

This was so easy and so good!!! Thanks for sharing this recipe <333

Excellent! I had some leftover cabbage from making cabbage rolls. The cabbage had been steamed so I fixed the recipe as stated but cooked on high pressure for only 2 minutes (and I like my cooked vegetables al dente, not mushy). Amazing recipe - will fix again!
Juanita Stinson says
It would help to give the estimated pounds for the 1 head of cabbage. What will be the good fit for the 6 quart pressure pot?
Tanya says
Good point. I've actually never weighed the cabbage. I do typically buy medium-sized heads of cabbage, chop it, and just fill it to the top as I did in the photos.
KP says
Ok - I don’t even like cabbage, but this recipe changed that. So easy and quick. I was fixing this for my Dad to go along with Corned Beef and wasn’t planning on having any of either! So, you turned this gal around. Thanks!
Tanya says
Thanks KP! So glad you liked them 🙂

I make this for my family, but like others with some changes. I add sliced onion, and only about 2 to 3 Tbsp of butter that I cut into cubes and dot the top of the cabbage with it. And we cut the broth back to about 1/2 cup. You still get plenty of juice to stop up with cornbread. I also break up a bullion cube on top. Then I only cook mine for 4 minutes, then allow it to slow release about 2 minutes, then I quick release. We prefer our cabbage to be just tender. At 6 minutes cooking time it's far too soft almost mushy.
With the bullion cube you don't need any salt, just a bit of fresh cracked pepper.
Sometimes we add some cut up kielbasa or a can of corned beef on top and cook it.
Comes out delicious and perfect every time.

I have used this recipe 4 times now. But I add 1/3 cup of sugar on top of cabbage Yummy yummy.
Brooke says
I did cut back on the butter a little bit but this was absolutely delicious! My new, quick way to cook cabbage. Thank you!!
Shelly says
Can u add the seasoning before it cooks?
Can u add more broth & add it last & pour over the cabbage?
Tanya says
Hi Shelly, yes you can do both. You still want to make sure there is some broth to make sure the machine rises to pressure. More broth is fine too but the recipe as is produces a good bit of broth.

Made this exactly as written. REALLY liked it as did everyone I served it to...However, I thought 6 minutes was a bit long. Mine came out a bit "soggy" for my liking. The next time I made it, I added onion, garlic powder, cut back on the butter and added a dollop of bacon fat and cooked it 5 minutes. Still a bit soggy. Today, I tried again and cooked it with the added things but cut the cook time down to 4 minutes with a 1-minute natural release and then a quick release. I have found the "sweet spot" for this dish! I think the onion, garlic powder and bacon fat really adds to the finished dish!
Ed says
We tried this method for dinner tonight, the corned beef came out wonderful, I needed a spatula to get it out of the pot. The cabbage and potatoes needed much longer than 5 minutes. I started at 6, then released and forked them and they were still had, did 10 more, which is more like 20 bc of the pressurization process, and still weren’t done.
Kay says
@Ed, This recipe is only for the cabbage and did not include corned beef or potatoes! I use the IP for mashed potatoes a lot, and, even cubing them small, they require 10+ minutes (IP cook minutes, not including pressurization). Not sure re: recommended time for corned beef as I have never cooked it. But raw potatoes I KNOW require a bit of time; well over 6 minutes.

So so good. I love it!!!!
