It’s so simple. Yes, this Buttered Instant Pot Cabbage is so simple that I almost didn’t make it a blog post. But I promised I’d post more recipes that weren’t too complicated yet still were great on flavor. So here’s to delicious cabbage made right in your Instant Pot Pressure Cooker.
My family and I love to visit different churches in the rural parts of North Carolina. One of our favorite things to do after church is to…eat. One of our favorite churches feeds us after service and it’s some of the best soul food cooking you can have. I’m talking baked chicken, macaroni and cheese, and cabbage.
The cabbage is perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned, and so very delicious. So I converted the recipe to my Instant Pot so I can have cabbage whenever I want.
How to prepare cabbage for cooking
In order to cook this cabbage in the Pressure Cooker, start by washing and cutting the cabbage. First, cut the cabbage in half. Then core the cabbage by removing the tough stems. I cut a "V" shape around the core and remove it.
Lay the cabbage side by side and cut each half into four separate pieces. Then, slice across the pieces and cut cabbage into 1 inch pieces. It shall fall apart into a ton of pieces but that is ok.
How to cook cabbage in an Instant Pot Pressure Cooker
First, add your liquid to the insert. I use 1 cup of chicken broth. Then add your butter and lay your cut cabbage on top.
You can fill your Instant Pot to the top so long as the cabbage doesn’t interfere with closing of the lid or touch the lid when closed. The cabbage will shrink when cooking. I do the same thing when I make my Pressure Cooker Collard Greens.
Once you’ve placed your cabbage in the pressure cooker, cover and cook on high pressure for 6 minutes. Once your timer is done, do a quick release and add your salt and pepper.
How long does it take to cook cabbage in a pressure cooker?
That will honestly depend. I prefer 6 minutes as it makes the cabbage nice and soft but not too mushy. For cabbage with a little more crisp, you can reduce the time to 4 minutes. My pressure cooker takes about 15 minutes to come to pressure with this recipe.
Can I sub ingredients?
Yes. You can sub vegetable broth for chicken broth if you want to make it Vegeterian. Add other vegetables like carrots or thick cut potatoes as well.

Notes
- This recipe was prepared in a 6Qt Instant Pot Duo.
- You can substitute vegetable broth for chicken broth. You can also omit the butter, but then it wouldn't be buttered cabbage.
- Serve with a slotted spoon.
- I highly recommend investing in a good black pepper grinder. There is nothing like fresh ground pepper.

Add your chicken broth, butter, to the Instant Pot. Then add your cabbage on the top. Cover your Instant Pot and make sure your valve is set to "Sealing" Press Pressure Cook (Or Manual on some models) and adjust timer to 6 minutes by using the "+" or "-" buttons. Make sure it's set to High Pressure. When timer goes off, press Cancel and carefully switch the valve from "sealing" to "venting" Some people use a spoon or dish towel to avoid the steam. Once all the pressure is released, open the Instant Pot and season the cabbage with salt and pepper. Stir and serve with a slotted spoon.

I love cabbage but have never been able to get it right, whether I boiled, fried, smothered, or sauteed it. Also, I have chewing issues, so when other people cook it, it's always too hard. I cooked this today and OMG! It was delicious, and I will cook it often. Thank you so much!

I just made this Instant Pot Buttered Cabbage, and it is inexpensive, easy, fast, and delicious!
The only change I made was to add 3 large yukon gold potatoes cut into 8 wedges each, and I’m glad I did...they were cooked perfectly. Thank you!
Sandy says
@Lori, Great idea!.

This is so incredibly good. Nothing fancy but since finding this recipe, I make it over and over and over. Thank you for sharing.

Question: Could you cook it, say, 4 minutes (or less) and just do a natural release or would it turn out mushy?
Tanya says
Hi Shirley, I haven't done it this way but my guess is that it would be a little mushy if you let it fully naturally release for 20 minutes. You could try 4 minutes on high pressure, and letting it naturally release for about 5 minutes and then quick releasing the remaining pressure.

I have cooked cabbage in wedges, use this basic recipe, but only cut a small head into quarters or sixths. The core may be removed or left in place to hole the portions together. Broth is nice, but I've also just used water. After cooking, drizzle a little melted butter over each wedge.

Thank you for this fabulous recipe! I have a 3 quart Instant Pot and made very few adjustments to the ingredients. My husband loves this cabbage but was so confused. He knew I hadn’t been cooking cabbage all afternoon, and yet here it was for a quick dinner on his plate cooked just right! This is definitely one of my “go-to” recipes. Thanks again!
Tanya says
Thank you 🙂 So glad you liked it.
Leslie says
If I am feeding six, what adjustments donI need to make to double the recipe?
Tanya says
Hi Leslie, This would be hard to double in a 6 qt but if you have an 8 qt, double the ingredients but keep the cook time the same.
Melissa says
This looks like a tasty recipe! I can't wait to try it, but I have an 8qt IP. Does that mean I need to add more chicken broth or butter or cook it for longer than 6 min?
Tanya says
Nope, you can keep everything the same for this recipe in your 8qt.
Michelle Jackman says
My husband likes smoked sausage cooked in cabbage. I was wondering if you had ever cooked it? If so since the sausage is technically already cooked how long would you cook it and the cabbage together in an IP?
Tanya says
Hi Michelle, I haven't added it but I've had other reviewers who have. Most people add it in the beginning of the cooking cycle.
Robert Moore says
Hi Michelle! I LOVE cabbage that has been cooked with sausage!!! When I make mine, I rough chop an onion, add olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic powder, cajun seasoning, a healthy splash of red vinegar and a nice dollop of honey into my I Pot and allow it to become translucent. I cut the core out of the cabbage and slice it into thin strips about 3/4 inches wide. I begin the cooking process with 10 minutes and then test to determine if the cabbage is done to your likeness. If not, Pressure cook for an additional 5 minutes (add 5 minutes cooking time until cabbage is done to your specs. And don't forget a nice slice of cornbread to top it off 🙂 A meal in itself!!!

Sounds amazing and so fast!
I do have one question.
Cabbages come in many different sizes and shapes.
What size cabbage do you use? Better yet,any idea of the weight of the head of cabbage do you use? (Of course, it doesn't need to be exact).
We love cabbage so I know I'll be making this often.
Thank you for sharing this recipe. I'm hooked to my IP. I have 3 inner pots, so I can make one dish after another and just put them in the dishwasher. Or leftovers in the refrigerator without using the stove or other pots.
Tanya says
I try to pick up one that's not too small or too large, so medium sized, about 32 ounces. I like to have ebough to fill to the top of my 6 qt Instant Pot, then the cabbage shrinks while cooking.
Rhonda says
Love cooked cabbage, and this takes the cook time to almost nothing! Thank you!!!
Brian says
Rhonda would the time for cooking be the same for two heads? Thanks

I'd like to know also!!

I'm going to saute chopped bacon (and maybe a little onion) in the instant pot first. Then proceed with the rest of your recipe. Thanks!
