We always try to have fish a couple of nights a week, it's so quick to cook, plus it's low in fat, high in protein, and full of healthy Omega-3s. Although I love to use my air fryer when it comes to making fish, the oven is great for larger portions.
This easy oven-baked fish recipe is so effortless to make; it's the perfect option after a long and busy day. It takes minutes to prep, and it's quick to cook so that you can get a tasty, healthy, and filling dinner on the table in no time.

How to make oven-baked fish
- Gather your ingredients.
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Dry fish filets with a paper towel or a clean kitchen towel. Place on a large sheet pan and rub the oil over the fish filets, covering both sides.
- Sprinkle the filets with the seasoning.
- Place in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, until the fish is flaky and reaches an internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit.
What's the best fish to use?
I like to make this recipe with white fish like cod, tilapia, or halibut, but it will work well with salmon too. It's best to use fairly thick fillets that will stay nice and moist when they are baked. I prefer to use skinless, as this method doesn't get the skin crispy, but you can use fish with the skin on it.
Can you use frozen fish?
When it comes to fish fillets, I find that fresh have a better texture, but if you only have frozen, they will work well too. Be sure to thoroughly defrost them and pat them dry to remove excess moisture which can make them soggy before seasoning and baking them.
What do you serve with it?
This easy oven-baked fish recipe is great to serve with your favorite veggie, rice, and potato side dishes and a dollop of Tartar Sauce! Try them with:
- Garlic Mashed Potatoes
- Garlic Mashed Cauliflower
- Yellow Rice
- Seasoned Air Fryer Asparagus
- Sautéed Yellow Squash
You could also use the cooked fish to make these delicious fish fritters.
Recipe Notes and Tips
- The thickness of your filets will determine how long they need to be baked. Thinner filets will cook faster in the oven.
- Leftovers will keep well in the fridge for 3 to 4 days.
- Reheat leftovers in the oven on a lined baking sheet with a couple of tablespoons of water and lightly cover with foil. Bake at 275F for 15 minutes to warm through.
- This easy oven-baked fish is a great hands off method to cook fish fillets to perfection. Make sure you don't overcook them by using and an instant-read thermometer.

This is such a delicious, healthy and simple fish recipe! I’ve made it several times now and my husband and I love it. We serve it with a veggie and either rice or potatoes. The fish seasoning recipe linked is very good and super easy to toss together. It involves spices most of us already have in our spice drawer. Thanks for sharing this yummy recipe, Tanya! It’s my go to!

I love fish with skin on; do I place it skin side up or down ?
Tanya says
Hi Larry! Great question. I do skin side down when baking fish with the skin on. However, I always make sure to either grease the foil paper if I'm using it or use nonstick.
