Growing up in a Jamaican household has its perks. Every Saturday morning there was Beres Hammond or Bob Marley playing in the house as we cleaned and if we children were good, mom made us these delicious fritters.
Move over banana bread, you’ve got some competition. I’ve been told I have a pretty amazing banana bread recipe (took lots of trying out recipes to get that one perfect) but I can’t believe I haven’t written about these banana fritters before.
They were a huge yummy part of my childhood and I’m excited to share them with you today. They are the perfect way to use those ripe bananas before they go bad.
How to make Banana Fritters
First, grab three ripe bananas and smash them together with a fork until they are mashed and a little watery.
Then add your vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar, and salt to bananas. Next, add your all purpose flour. I use a sifter to add my flour. If you don’t have one, no worries, you can still make the recipe. I just find the sifter allows my flour mixture to incorporate into my mashed bananas easier.
Stir with a spoon until your mixture is fully combined. Your batter should not be too thick or thin but should flow easily off a spoon.
Pour about ¼ cup oil in a 10 inch skillet and heat it over medium-high heat. Once your oil is hot, pour the fritters in pan by the spoonful.
Once bubbles appear in the top of the fritter and the bottom is golden brown, flip the fritters and cook until the other side is brown as well. Mine take about 2 minutes per side to brown.
Remove fritters from skillet and drain on paper towel. Ya mon 🙂

Notes
- The riper your bananas are, the sweeter your fritters will be. Modify sugar amount to your preference.
- The fritters are not meant to be fluffy like pancakes or bread. They are to be thinner and moist.
- If using a cast iron skillet, reduce heat to medium rather than medium high.

Taste just like Sunday morning in Jamaica. Exactly like my grandma’s and mums. I add a bit more vanilla and only use the banana when they are black black. Thank you for sharing.

I've been looking for this recipe for years...my Husband's Grandma (from St Vincent) died over 10 years ago and she made the best banana fritters. Just made this recipe and my hubs teared up, it's just like hers!! Thank you!

Always have a hard time replicating recipes from home when I'm homesick because my mom doesn't use measurements. This hit the spot when I was craving banana fritters and were perfect!! I subbed a tablespoon of monk fruit in place of sugar and probably could have survived without it. Thank you!!

We loved the Banana Fritters - easy to make and awesome. Thank You xx

Approximately how many fritters is that calorie for? It is not specified here.
Tanya says
About 3-4 fritters, depending on how large they are.
Barbie Carlisle says
Can these be made in my Air fryer or do I need to alter the recipe?
Tanya says
Hi Barbie, it would have to be altered for the air fryer. This batter is too thin for the air fryer. It would need a lot more flour to make a thicker batter. The texture wouldn't be exactly the same either.

Another hungry websurfer here, grateful to find your delicious recipe ♡♡♡

I had 3 huge bananas that were going off and had to eat all three. So, decided to google a recipe for banana fritters and came across this super easy recipe.
My wife who don't like banana in cakes ate up most of the fritters.
Even started to offer me some and poured some hazelnut syrup over them.
These were yum. So yum we left none for the kids hahaha.
Bobbie says
Has anyone ever tried rolling the fritters in cinnamon and sugar after they come out of the oil?? I know it’s not traditional but it sounds like such a good combination!
Tanya says
That sounds delicious Bobbie!
Yasser says
@Bobbie, Here in Cape Town it is tradition to mix cinnamon in some sugar to make a bowl of cinnamon sugar. We then sprinkle these over any fritters before eating or sending a plate to our neighbors. Yummy
Dave says
Can't wait to dig into these, counsellor.
