Growing up in a Jamaican household has its perks. Every Saturday morning there was Beres Hammond or Bob Marley playing in the house as we cleaned and if we children were good, mom made us these delicious fritters.
Move over banana bread, you’ve got some competition. I’ve been told I have a pretty amazing banana bread recipe (took lots of trying out recipes to get that one perfect) but I can’t believe I haven’t written about these banana fritters before.
They were a huge yummy part of my childhood and I’m excited to share them with you today. They are the perfect way to use those ripe bananas before they go bad.
How to make Banana Fritters
First, grab three ripe bananas and smash them together with a fork until they are mashed and a little watery.
Then add your vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar, and salt to bananas. Next, add your all purpose flour. I use a sifter to add my flour. If you don’t have one, no worries, you can still make the recipe. I just find the sifter allows my flour mixture to incorporate into my mashed bananas easier.
Stir with a spoon until your mixture is fully combined. Your batter should not be too thick or thin but should flow easily off a spoon.
Pour about ¼ cup oil in a 10 inch skillet and heat it over medium-high heat. Once your oil is hot, pour the fritters in pan by the spoonful.
Once bubbles appear in the top of the fritter and the bottom is golden brown, flip the fritters and cook until the other side is brown as well. Mine take about 2 minutes per side to brown.
Remove fritters from skillet and drain on paper towel. Ya mon 🙂

Easy Jamaican Banana Fritters
Ingredients
- 3 ripe bananas medium size
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
- 3 Tablespoon brown sugar
- Pinch of salt
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- Oil for frying.
Instructions
- Mash bananas with fork in bowl.
- Add brown sugar, vanilla, extract, cinnamon, nutmeg and a pinch of salt. Sift in flour and stir with spoon until fully combined.
- Add oil to a 10 inch skillet over medium-high heat. Once oil is hot, drop banana fritter batter in oil by the spoonful. Once one side is golden and bubbles appear on the top, flip fritter and cook until the other side is browned as well.
- Remove fritters and drain on paper towels. Enjoy 🙂

Notes
- The riper your bananas are, the sweeter your fritters will be. Modify sugar amount to your preference.
- The fritters are not meant to be fluffy like pancakes or bread. They are to be thinner and moist.
- If using a cast iron skillet, reduce heat to medium rather than medium high.

Hi, I have just discovered your recipes and having spent time in Jamaica, I love many foods from there! do you have a proper Coco Bread recipe? Ive tried a couple and they just arent the same. I ate so much of it there that I dont know how I didn't look like a bread roll when I left! You may have already posted it as Ive only JUST got here and havent looked yet.
Thanks so much.❤
Tanya says
Hi Amy, I don't have one yet as I haven't perfected it yet. I'll be posting one as soon as I get it right. Have you ever had Jamaican meatloaf? It's literally a coco bread stuffed with Jamaican patty filling and it's amazing. I'll have to make that too. Your comment just got me thinking of it too lol.
Chantal says
Thank you so much for sharing this. Would this recipe work with almond flour or coconut flour?
Tanya says
Hi Chantal, either should work, you may just have to adjust the amount of flour to get the desired texture for frying.

Hi Tanya...greetings from lockdown in Spain! I've just made these and we couldn't eat them fast enough - almost burnt my mouth in the process 🙂 I fried them in coconut oil too and hat worked really nicely. Thanks for a great recipe. Stay safe!

Really enjoyed this recipe, I used cooking spray to make it more WW friendly and that worked out good. Another great way to use up bananas.
Tanya says
Hi Danielle, thank you! Great idea with the cooking spray too.
Nancy says
@Tanya, oooh— maybe you could spray them and bake on a silicon mat to make less oil?
Tanya says
That may work. I'm planning on trying to see if it could be similar.
Yana says
Hiya! I was wondering if the fritters would still turn out good with white sugar?
Tanya says
Hi Yana, yep, white sugar works fine and is still delicious.
Abigail says
Greetings from the UK! I added a little water and they turned out perfect and delicious. Reminds me of my childhood. Thank you.

Sarah says
First time making fritters of any kind, and making a batter to fry, they were delicious, I added almond milk to ensure the runniness and unrefined sugar.
As I'm coeliac, I also used gluten free self raising flour and baking powder.. ?
Thank you!!! ? ?
Tanya says
Thank you Sarah! And thank for the tips on making them gluten-free 🙂
Sarah says
@Tanya, I'm afraid now, they're my new addiction.. ?

These were delicious and literally gone in seconds. I did add a little milk but other than that followed the recipe to a t. Thanks for sharing!
Michelle says
How long will these keep fresh?
Tanya says
We usually eat them the same day within a few hours. I’m sure they would be fine refrigerated and reheated though.
Manny says
Amazing recipe! Doubled the recipe to feed my family of 7 and everyone loved them - chewy, great banana flavour, and dense enough to eat with a simple side of sauce or berry compote
Steve says
These are amazing
Absolutely 10/10 and thank you
Jamie says
Hi there! Can you cook these in the air fryer?
Tanya says
Hi Jamie, I haven't tried these in an Air Fryer yet as I know they will change the texture a bit. However, it's on my list to try and if it works, I will for sure share the results 🙂
