Ingredients You Need for This Recipe
- Tomato Paste
- Chicken Broth
- Dried Oregano
- Red and/or Green Bell Peppers
- Sweet Onion
- Garlic Cloves
- Italian Sausage
- Hoagie Rolls
How to make air fryer sausage and peppers
- Place tomato paste, chicken broth, and oregano bowl in a 7-inch bowl that will fit inside your air fryer. Whisk until incorporated.
- Lay peppers, onion, and garlic in the bowl and toss with broth mixture. Place in air fryer basket.
- Close air fryer basket and cook on 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 10- 15 minutes, stirring halfway, until onions and peppers have softened a little.
- Open the air fryer basket and lay sausage links on top of onions and peppers and cook for 20 more minutes, flipping the links halfway.
- Remove and serve sausage and peppers on hoagie rolls. Enjoy!
What are the best sausages to use?
I like to use Italian sausages for this recipe, you can use hot or mild. Flavored with fennel and garlic they are so tasty! You can use other pork or beef sausages, but stay away from thinner sausages.
What do you serve with sausage and peppers?
I love to serve the air fried sausage on peppers on hoagie rolls for a quick and easy dinner, sometimes served up with some French Fries or a veggie side. If you like, you can skip the rolls and serve with a veggie or potato side.
Why use an air fryer for this recipe?
I love how this meal comes together all in one bowl and the cooking process is pretty hands off. The sausages come out perfectly juicy with crispy skins and because the veggies are cooked under them, the veggies are flavored with the juices. It's one delicious meal!
Recipe Notes and Tips
- Make a foil sling so that the bowl will be easy to remove from the air fryer.
- Flip the sausages half way through cooking so that they cook evenly all over.

I cooked my veggies too long, but that was my bad. If you follow the recipe and video, this is amazing!!! We had it with cold pasta salad and will definitely put it in rotation!!!

Made this and served it with baked beans. My husband loved it!

I have the Philips XXL air fryer and have the roasting pan in the recommended Philips accessory list. The amount of sliced onion and bell peppers far exceeded the capacity of my roasting pan (I have photos if you are interested). I used my ActiFry instead, and the amount of sliced onion and bell peppeers proved a bit too much for that as well. It's a great taste combination, but the ingredients list needs tweaking.
Tanya says
Hi Kathy, I've made this recipe in the Bella Pro 5.3 qt (the air fryer used in the step by step photos) and the Cosori 5.8 qt (the air fryer used in the video). I also own a Phillips XXL air fryer and that basket is not as large as the others. The size of your pepper and onions will also vary depending on many factors. I suggest adjusting the amounts to fit your basket.

I’m going to make these tonight. I don’t have a bowl or pan to fit my air fryer. Any suggestions?
Tanya says
Heavy-duty foil paper might work. You can lay it on the bottom.
Alice says
@Tanya, that’s exactly what I did. Thanks for your answer.
Paula says
How do you recommend cooking this in an air fryer toaster oven?
Tanya says
The same way but it may take a little longer to get the peppers cooked in the toaster oven. I'd keep an eye on it.
Amanda says
These were perfect to make after a day at work! The whole family loved them. I'm glad I found your site! Thank you!
C D says
These were amazing, the best I ever made. They reminded me of the sausage sandwiches I used to get at fairs and church bazaars as a kid. The sausages were beautifully browned and so tasty. I was surprised when I opened up the fryer and saw them! Can’t wait to make them again.
Tanya says
Yay! So glad you liked them C D 🙂
May Bochette says
Could you use frozen fajata mix bells peppers with onion, layer on botthom and sausage on top?
Tanya says
Hi May, yes you can, but you'll probably want to reduce the cooktime of the peppers, so I would just add them in with the sausage at the same time rather than cooking them to soften first.
Mary says
There is garlic in the ingredients but I don't see it in the directions. Do I add it to the pepper and onions?
Thanks!
Tanya says
Hi Mary, that is correct. Just updated the post. Thank you 🙂

One of my favorite things to do on my Saturdays off is to get brats at a local stand not far from my house and then go to the park for lunch. The stand didn't open this year because of the virus and I really miss it. I made this recipe this morning and now I will be making these and taking them to the park. The sausages are so good. Thank you for sharing.
Tanya says
So glad you liked the recipe Julie. Lunch at the park sounds amazing and these are perfect for it.
