As soon as the leaves start to turn on the trees, my thoughts turn to all things Fall, and that usually means one of two things, apples or pumpkin!
Today it's apple and my favorite apple pie seasoning blend which will add the flavors of fall to your favorite apple-based desserts.
It takes just minutes to blend the spices together, using spices that most of you will already have in your stores. Once blended it's ready to use wherever you need a hint of those warming spices!
How to make apple pie spice blend
This easy apple pie spice blend can be made in minutes and ready to use immediately.
Add the spices to a small bowl and stir to combine.
Pour the spice blend into an airtight container or jar with a tight-fitting lid. It's ready to use straight away or store for later use.
What's in an apple pie spice blend?
- Cinnamon
- Cardamom
- Nutmeg
- Allspice
Most apple pie spice blends will include ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice; however, I like to add ground cardamom. This results in a warming spice blend that has a real depth of both sweet and earthy flavors.
Are there other spices I can include in apple pie spice?
When making your own spice blends, it all comes down to personal taste. Here are some suggestions of other ground spices that work really well with apples.
- Ginger
- Anise (which will add a touch of licorice)
- Cloves (just a pinch - don't be too heavy-handed or it can taste medicinal)
How to store homemade apple pie spice
Depending on the freshness of your spices, this blend will keep well for 3 to 6 months, so for sure, make up a big batch so it's on hand to use. Once mixed, store it in an airtight container or jar in a cupboard so it's out of direct sunlight.
Don't keep spices in the fridge, as this can dull the flavors.
How do you use it?
This is an adaptable spice, and once made, I find a whole host of uses for it.
It works well with apple-based desserts like apple pies, crisps, or crumbles. Try adding some to my Southern Fried Apples or my Baked Air Fryer Apples.
It also works well in baked goods, so add a touch of warming spice to your favorite cookie recipe.
Another favorite use is to whisk some through a pancake or waffle batter, even better if I'm serving with a side of stewed apples.

Recipe Tips
- Double, triple, or quadruple the recipe if you like.
- Store in an airtight container for future uses. Keep at room temperature and out of direct sunlight.
- Check that your spices aren't stale before making this spice blend. To test their freshness, rub a little of each between your fingers, and they should release an aroma.
- I prefer to make smaller batches of spice blends, that way, they always taste fresh.
- A funnel makes it easy to pour spices into a jar.
